An Artist in Residency grant funded by the Nebraska Arts Council and the Arts are Basic Program at Doane University allowed writer, actor and storyteller Pita Paskowitz to visit Maxey Elementary School in September 2018. Five 4th grade classrooms were inspired to write personal narratives by Paskowitz and spent five, 90-minute sessions with the resident artist and learned how to narrow the focus of their writing, add sensory details that draw the reader into the experience, and included voice to ensure their personal authorship shined through. Paskowitz also led a training session with 40 Doane University elementary education majors to tech them about the story-writing process she utilizes during residency programs and prepare them to work with the 4th- grade students and assist in the process of developing their personal narratives. Doane students visited the Maxey 4th grade classrooms to work one-on-one with students as they developed their narratives. At the end of the residency, a day was set aside for each classroom to celebrate the experience and students shared their personal narratives with each other.
